Desh Bhagat Dental College and Hospital, a constituent of Desh Bhagat University, observed World No Tobacco Day. The theme of World No Tobacco Day 2019 is “tobacco and lung health”.

Dental students of various classes participated in the programme and organised awareness drives at different places against tobacco products. The campaign was organised with the aim to increase awareness on negative impacts of tobacco on people’s lungs, which causes cancer and other chronic respiratory diseases.

Chancellor Zora Singh encouraged dental students and staff to make people aware about the ill effects of tobacco on human health. He said tobacco smoking is the primary cause of lung cancer, and is responsible for over two-thirds of lung cancer deaths globally. Exposure to passive smoking at home or in the work place also increases the risk of lung cancer.

A team, led by Dr Sanjeev Soni, made people aware about oral health. Dr Himashu Sood, Dr Sonali Saluja and Dr Tania conducted an awareness talk for migrant workers and labourers. They informed the workers about devastating harms of tobacco and motivated tobacco consumers to visit the tobacco cessation centre at the DBDC.

Pro-Chancellor Dr Tajinder Kaur said the team counselled the patients on lifestyle changes such as reducing tobacco use and provided them solutions to reduce tobacco-related deaths and diseases at Desh Bhagat Chowk.

Dr Manpreet Kaur, along with a team, visited Desh Bhagat Global School and addressed students from Class VIII to XI, as this age group is the most vulnerable to be sold tobacco products to. Students were made aware about different forms of tobacco and their harmful effects on individual’s physical, mental and social life were explained. Students also took a pledge to refrain from the use of tobacco and adopted the motto, “Say no to tobacco and yes to life”.

BJS Dental College, Hospital and Research Institute

On the occasion of No Tobacco Day, a tobacco cessation centre was inaugurated at BJS Dental College, Hospital and Research Institute. Chairman Baba Jaswant Singh inaugurated the centre.

The guest of honour for the event was Dr Nitin Verma, member of Punjab Dental Council. Vice-chairman Amarjit Singh, director Amanpreet Singh and principal Dr DS Kalsi were also present at the occasion. A nukkad natak was also presented by the interns of the department of public health dentistry for health education.

By year 2030, tobacco is expected to be the single biggest cause of death worldwide. As many as 10 million people are expected to die every year due to tobacco use. Tobacco control and cessation is a professional led ‘call to action’ programme to eradicate tobacco addiction.
