Cases surpass 5,000 mark in Ludhiana

Covid-19 cases today surpassed the 5,000 mark with 224 persons testing positive in the district. The first case was reported on March 24 and it took only 139 days to reach the figure of 5,032. The cases have been witnessing a spike since the lockdown was lifted.

Meanwhile, 10 more succumbed to the virus, taking the death toll up to 168.

In Ludhiana district, the first positive case was reported on March 24 and the month saw only two cases. The number rose to 78 in April and to 195 in May. A sudden spike in positive cases was seen in June as the lockdown was lifted. The number rose to 840 in June and further swelled to 3,246 in July. In the nine days of August, 1,786 cases were added to the tally, taking the total up to 5,032.

As many as 4,442 cases have been reported from the city and the remaining 590 from Jagraon, Samrala, Raikot, Payal and Khanna.

Those who lost their lives today include a 19-year-old woman from Machhiwara who had a blocked heart since birth and a 46-year-old woman from Tibba Road, a diabetic who died at Rajindra Hospital, Patiala). Seven victims were in the age group of 50-60 years and belonged to Guru Arjun Dev Nagar, Dhandra Road, Model Gram, Subhash Nagar, Jawaddi Khurd, Mohalla Jagdish Nagar and Sant Street. One of the deceased was an 81-year-old man from Dugri (Deep Hospital).

Of the positive cases reported today, 68 came from flu corners, 71 through contact tracing and 26 from OPDs. Nine of them were policemen, eight healthcare workers, three pre-operative cases, five pregnant women, one undertrial and one domestic traveller.

To date, 25,268 persons have been placed under home quarantine in the district, and the number of such persons at present is 4,776. Today, 387 persons were sent to home quarantine. A total of 71,998 samples have been taken, of which the reports of 1,419 are pending.
