‘China dor’ takes life of 15-yr-old boy in Samrala, kin hold protest

A 15-year-old boy, Taranjot Singh of Rohla village, lost his life after he was injured by the banned synthetic thread, also known as ‘China dor’, on the Chandigarh-Ludhiana highway near Chehlan village in Samrala district. The incident raises serious concerns about the availability of the deadly string in the marke despite a ban on its sale and use.
As per information, Taranjot, a student of Class X, was returning home from school on a motorcycle with his friend Prabhjot Singh. He was riding pillion when his neck got entangled in the string, seriously injuring him. He died shortly after.
According to reports, he was the only son of his parents. The incident has left the village of Rohla in a state of deep mourning, and his parents are inconsolable in their grief. Villagers and family members held a strong protest, raising slogans against the police administration. They questioned how the ‘China dor’ was still being sold openly in markets despite an official ban.
While the police administration confirmed that Taranjot’s death had been caused by the string, they were unable to provide answers regarding its continued sale. Despite repeated questioning from the media about how the ban was being bypassed, the police continued to make claims that strict action was being taken against the sellers and buyers, but reality was different on the ground. Even during Lohri festival, kite lovers blatantly used this deadly string.
Samrala SHO Harvinder Singh said the thread got stuck in some trees on the Chandigarh-Ludhiana road and got entangled on to the boy’s neck. Khanna SSP Darpan Ahluwalia said that the family had organised a protest and they were calmed by the police and administration officials by assuring action against the culprits. A case on the charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder has been registered against unknown persons.
“I also deliberated with DC Himanshu Jain and a compensation of Rs 5 lakh has been announced for the family,” added the SSP. He added that Khanna police had arrested 20 persons and seized 1,200 spools of Chinese thread in recent days.
Sources said that ‘China dor’ is being manufactured in different states. Shopkeepers start hoarding the stock of banned thread a few months before Lohri and Basant Panchami.
