Residents and social organisations paid tributes to the martyrs of Pulwama terror attack. They took out candle marches and held assemblies.

The IMA called an emergency meeting of the office-bearers at the IMA house on Friday. A two-minute silence was observed.

IMA members said it was high time that the Government of India should make a policy to end militancy.

In another such protest, Shiv Sena Hindustan burnt an effigy of Jaish-e-Mohammad at Tajpur Road.

Members of the group gathered and raised slogans against Pakistan and terrorist outfits.

The Petrol Pump Dealers Association, Ludhiana, paid homage to the departed souls by shutting pumps in the city for 15 minutes.

While a few petrol stations were shut, others said there was some communication gap and they had not got the message in this regard.

Ashok Sachdeva from the association said the motive was to pay respect to the jawans, who had sacrificed their own lives for the safety of people.

The Anti-Drug and Corruption Welfare Society, Chaura Bazaar, also protested and burnt an effigy near Clock Tower.

Society members said Pakistan should be taught a lesson in the way it best understood. They added that the sacrifice by the soldiers must not go in vain.

Members of State Bank of India Staff Association held a candle march from the SBI Civil Lines in the evening.

The staff held a peaceful march to pay homage to those killed in the attack.

Another candle march was held by the Peace Mission and Punjab Basketball Association at Rakh Bagh.

The participants prayed for solace to the families who have lost their members.

Brij Goyal from the peace mission read a poem of Sahir Ludhianvi on war: “Eh sharif insano, jang talti rahe toh behtar hai..hum or aap sabhi ke aangan mein shama jalti rahe toh behtar hai”, which touched all present there.

The Indian Doctors for Peace and Development (IDPD) extended condolences to the families of the brave soldiers fighting against violence in the valley and defending country’s sovereignty.

In a statement released here on Friday, Dr SS Soodan, president IDPD, Dr Shakeel Ur Rahman, general secretary, and Dr Arun Mitra, senior vice-president said history was a witness that violence is no solution to any issue.

“All wars ultimately end through dialogue. In the conditions of violence common citizens have to suffer. It is time that all concerned should get involved so that effective consensus is initiated so that South Asia becomes a peaceful region,” they said.

Any escalation in tension between India and Pakistan can have catastrophic consequences because both are nuclear power states, they added.

At Bhagat Singh Colony, members of Dr Ambedkar Navyuvak Dal held a prayer meeting in remembrance of those who laid their lives for countrymen.

They said the Modi government should take revenge from Pakistan so that justice is provided to the families of the departed souls.

The BJP Yuva Morcha also burnt effigies of the terrorist outfit responsible for killing of the CRPF jawans. The protest was held under the patronage of Jatinder Mittal and Gurdev Debi Sharma.

Condolence meet at court complex

Judges and lawyers on Friday jointly held a condolence meeting and expressed sympathy with the aggrieved families at the District Courts Complex. A two-minute silence was observed by all present there. The SAD Legal Wing strongly condemned the barbaric killings of CRPF jawans in J&K. Those present at the meeting included Parupkar Singh Ghuman, president of SAD Legal Wing.
