As the police are keeping an eye on malls to ensure that Covid-19 norms are being followed in true letter and spirit, the authorities concerned are also recording footfall of visitors at these establishments.
A police survey of the past five days (from June 8 to June 12) presents a gloomy picture of business at malls as visitors’ footfall has dipped considerably. Reason is obvious that people are avoiding shopping due to the fear of coronavirus.
As per records accessed by The Tribune, the city has eight prominent malls —JMD Goverdhan Mall near railway station, MBD Mall near Ferozepur Road, Wave Mall on Ferozepur Road, Silver Arc Mall, Pavillion Mall near Session Chowk, Flames Mall at Gurdev Nagar, Omaxe Mall on Ferozepur Road and Ansal Plaza Mall.
MBD Mall
The mall has total 70 active shops. On June 8 and 9, only 25 and 41 shops were open at the mall while the customers’ footfall was 650 and 578, respectively. On June 10, 11, 12, only 40 shops opened while the visitors’ footfall recorded was 775, 825, and 708, respectively, at MBD Mall.
Wave Mall
Similarly, Wave Mall has 55 active shops. On June 8 and 9, only 24 and 35 shops opened while the customers’ footfall recorded was 314 and 610. On June 10, 11 and 12, footfall recorded at Wave Mall was 625, 670, and 730, respectively.
Pavillion Mall
Pavillion Mall has 90 shops. On June 8, 9, 10 and 11, only 15, 33, 30 and 31 shops opened, respectively, and the footfall of visitors recorded on these days was 282, 477, 572, and 381, respectively.
Silver Arc Mall
Silver Arc Mall has 68 active shops. On June 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12, only 40, 25, 28, 48 and 54, shops opened at Silver Arc Mall, respectively, and the footfall recorded on these days was 810, 622, 775, 683 and 695, respectively.
JMD Goverdhan Mall
On June 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12, the number of shops open at the mall was eight, nine, nine, eight and 10 and the footfall recorded on these days was 75, 200, 138, 126 and 145, respectively. There are 200 active shops at the mall.
Flames Mall
Flames Mall has five active shops. On June 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12, only two, three, four, six and one shop opened at Flames Mall and the visitors’ footfall recorded on these days was 60, 102, 437, 350 and 130, respectively.
Omaxe Mall
Omaxe Mall has 10 active shops. On June 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 only one, four, four, six and three shop opened at Omaxe Mall and visitors’ footfall recorded was 10, 250, 437, 350 and 450, respectively.
Ansal Plaza Mall
Ansal Plaza Mall has 12 active shops. On June 8, seven and from June 9 to 12 eight shops opened at the mall. The customers’ footfall recorded from June 8 to June 12 was 250, 216, 306, 206, and 196, respectively.
Cops recording entry of visitors
DCP (Headquarters and Security), Akhil Chaudhary told Ludhiana Tribune, “The police is recording entry of all visitors coming to malls every day. Police teams are also conducted random checking at malls to ensure that the Covid-19 norms like wearing masks, sanitization and social distancing are being followed. Non-compliance of norms will invite FIR against the management of malls. This has already been conveyed to officials managing malls in the city.”
