A study, addressing antimicrobial usage and resistance (AMR), has earned the prestigious Dr G Nirmalan Trust Research Award 2023, conferred by the Veterinary Welfare Society, Kerala. The study was carried out in dairy herds in Punjab through a one health framework by Dr Deepthi Vijay, a PhD scholar, at the Centre for One Health of the university.

This esteemed accolade recognises outstanding contributions to applied research in the areas of veterinary and animal sciences. The award includes a citation and a cash prize of Rs 10,000. The research, carried out under the guidance of Dr Jasbir Singh Bedi, Director of the Centre for One Health, was part of the ICAR Niche Area of Excellence project titled ‘Antibiotic Resistance: Animal Human Interface’. Integrating field monitoring of antimicrobial usage and resistance with advanced molecular techniques, the study provided actionable insights into combating AMR in Punjab’s dairy sector. It emphasised a holistic one health approach, addressing the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health to tackle this global challenge.
