Ludhiana, August 19

The accused in the triple murder case was nabbed by the Ludhiana police on Sunday morning from Himmat Singh Dharamshala in Sangrur. Rajwinder Singh (45) brutally hacked his cousin sister Gurvinder Kaur (52), her maternal grandson Hitik Bassi (6) and granddaughter Mandeep Kaur (8) at her residence in Kishore Nagar on August 3.

“I had planned to kill my cousin sister Gurvinder and her husband Davinder, who are responsible for the break-up of my second marriage with a girl from Amritsar. I had to kill the children because when they came from school, they saw me cleaning blood stains. Another grouse due to which I wanted to kill the duo was that my brother-in-law Davinder and my father started some business in Ludhiana. My father had to sell two of our houses located in Harcharan Nagar and Guru Arjan Dev Nagar. Davinder was also an expert in sorcery, the influence of which also destroyed my life and business,” the accused told the police.

Police Commissioner Sukhchain Singh Gill, DCP Crime Gagan Ajit Singh, ADCP IV Rajvir Singh, ACP Crime Surinder Mohan, ACP Pawanjit addressed a press conference on Sunday. The CIA chief, Rajesh Sharma, and his team had been on the accused’s trail since August 3.

Dr Gill said the real name of the accused was Ravinder Singh Bakhshi, son of Jaswant Singh. He changed his name to Rajwinder Singh, son of Ajit Singh, after he was booked in a dowry harassment case by the Amritsar police and was also declared a PO in the same case in 2009. He first got married in 1997 which broke up due to the dowry harassment case against him in 2000.

The accused solemnised second marriage when he was on the run. He did not inform the girl about the case. Later in 2006, when her wife came to know about his second marriage, she also left him. “When my wife left me, I came to know that my sister Gurvinder and her husband Davinder had informed her about my second marriage and thus I decided to kill them. I have no remorse of whatever I did,” said the accused.

The accused had decided to kill his sister and her husband 10 years ago after his second marriage broke up. He started living in rented accommodation near the sister’s house two years ago.

The accused is tenth pass. He is an expert in embroidery. He had stayed in Delhi and Mumbai with his second wife. He worked as a loan agent in some bank in Amritsar. He also worked as a salesman in some shops in Chaura Bazar, Ludhiana.

What happened that day

Gagan Ajit Singh, DCP Crime, said the accused had bought a hammer, a cutter, chilli powder and an electrical circuit device about four months back. “For the past four months, the accused had been carrying a hammer, a cutter and other things whenever he visited the house. It was on August 3, when the children went to school, he hit Gurvinder on the head with the hammer from behind. He dragged the body in a room on the ground floor and after that started cleaning the blood stains. He was waiting for Gurvinder’s husband Davinder, whom he also wanted to kill. Unfortunately Hitik and Mandeep arrived there and they noticed him cleaning the blood stains. The accused also killed them and then left the place after locking the house,” said the DCP.

He kept changing locations

Rajesh Sharma, CIA chief, said after killing his cousin and her grandchildren, Rajwinder went to Amritsar where he stayed for night. The CIA team could not trace him there. Next morning on August 4, he left for Hanumangarh, Rajasthan, and stayed at some places there. He had been living at some dharamshala in Sangrur for the past three days.

Threat call to Davinder nails accused

While he was on the run, he made a threat call to deceased’s husband Davinder. He told him that he would kill him too. He threw the Sim card somewhere after making the call. The moment he inserted a new Sim in the same phone, the police technical cell traced the new phone number and put it on surveillance. Finally, he was nabbed in Sangrur.
