Doctors oppose state decision to begin factory operations

The medical fraternity in the district has condemned the decision of the state government to begin with industrial production in the state and allow the labour to stay back if the industry is capable of providing them lodging facilities.

Dr Karamvir Goyal, member of the Punjab Medical Council, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced lockdown for a reason, but by allowing industrial units to operate, the primary purpose of the lockdown would get defeated and social distancing would be compromised.

“Workers will work in a close environment and the industry here do not have accommodation facilities. In case the industry is unable to make arrangements for the labourers, they will be forced to live in confined spaces which will only make things worse,” said Dr Goyal.

The Ludhiana branch of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) also has strongly opposed this step. Dr Sunil Katyal, president, Ludhiana IMA, said the entire purpose of lockdown would be defeated if the industrial units were allowed to operate.

“Opening industrial units for functioning at this time will defeat the purpose of social distancing and quarantine. The medical fraternity is struggling to ensure steps to contain the spread of the virus and arrange personal protective equipment for the healthcare staff. Such decisions will work against the present situation,” said Dr Gaurav Sachdeva, senior vice-president, Ludhiana IMA.

Dr Rajeev Mahajan said a few units here had accommodation for workers. “Quarters cannot be constructed overnight and amidst such situations. The wise decision at this point is to provide the labour with essentials so that they do not go back home and can resume work when the lockdown is over,” he added.
