Ludhiana, July 12

An industrialist has written to Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh, requesting him to take steps to preserve the Mattewara forest area.

Ranjodh Singh, managing director of the GST Group, here, said no industrial park should be set up near the Mattewara forest land.

“The state government has taken a step to set up an industrial park near the area, which will ruin the ecological balance of this habitat. Further, pollution will affect the Sutlej water and air more. Many trees will be uprooted, land-grabbers will destroy the nature and rapid urbanisation will ruin the precious natural resources,” he stated in the letter.

“The Mattewara forest is home to many birds and animals such as peacock, antelopes, deer and sambar and other old varieties of flora and fauna. Being close to the river, it’s a natural habitat for the animals,” he said.

On the other hand, Divisional Forest officer Charanjit Singh said there was no proposal to set up any industrial park on the Mattewara forest land.
