Drugs seized from inmate at Ludhiana court, fresh case registered
Police say unidentified individual handed over the drugs to the accused while taking advantage of the crowd at the Ludhiana court
The police registered a case after allegedly recovering 16 narcotics capsules and smack from an inmate while at the district court complex for an appearance, officials said.
They said the accused — Harpreet Singh, alias Happy, a resident of Doraha — was already facing trial in a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
According to the information available, head constable Vipan, posted on general duty at Police Lines, Khanna, and other police personnel were producing Harpreet Singh at the district courts on February 26 when an unidentified individual slipped the accused a plastic envelope while taking advantage of the crowd.
After their suspicions were raised, police searched Harpreet and found the contraband in his right pocket.
The case was registered under relevant sections of the NDPS Act at Division Number 5 police station. Police said they are scanning footage from the CCTV cameras installed at the court complex to identify the individual who handed Harpreet the drugs.
Police say they will tighten security at the court premises to prevent similar incidents in the future.
