Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Dilpreet Singh Shergill, who passed away on February 22, was consigned to the flames on Sunday. He was cremated with full state honours at the cremation ground in Model Extension here.

The last rites were performed in the presence of Gurinder Singh Dhillon, ADGP (law and order), who appeared on the behalf of Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav, Suhail Qasim Mir, Joint Commissioner of Police (City) Ludhiana, Harkamalpreet Singh Khakh, Senior Superintendent of Police, Malerkotla, and other officilas of the Ludhiana and Malerkotla police.

Notably, DSP Dilpreet Singh (50) had breathed his last at a gym near the Bhai Bala chowk on the Ferozepur road. He was posted at Malerkotla. He reportedly suffered a heart attack while exercising in the gym.

Dilpreet, a resident of Ludhiana, used to go to the gym regularly. Earlier, he was posted as the ACP in Ludhiana. According to his colleagues, he was conscious about his health. He never forgot to go to the gym. A national level swimmer, Dilpreet joined the police force as an ASI in 1992. He served at various police stations in the state and was later promoted as the ASP. For the past few days, he was performing his night duty at the Khanauri border.

Dhillon said on behalf of DGP Gaurav Yadav, Punjab Police assure utmost commitment towards his family that comprises his wife and two-and-a-half-year old daughter.

“Yesterday, we lost our braveheart DSP Dilpreet Singh, who was on duty at the Khanauri border, Sangrur. He served the Punjab Police and the people of the state for over 31 years. We stand by his family in this hour of grief and will do everything to support them. Our prayers are with his family and loved ones. Our heartfelt condolences,” tweeted DGP Gaurav Yadav.
