It is important to pay special attention to your dog’s well-being during the winter season. This was stated by Dr Kirti Dua, In-charge of the Wildlife Centre, and Professor of Veterinary Medicine, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary & Animal Sciences University (GADVASU).

She said dogs needed protection from biting cold. “It is always better to take your dogs for walk in the late morning or early afternoon hours, and avoid early morning or late evening walks. Some dog breeds have dense undercoats which help protect them against very cold temperatures, but most dogs should be made to wear a coat to protect them from winter chill,” she said.

The expert said: “Tiles and uncarpeted areas may become extremely cold, so make sure to place the dog’s bed in a warm spot. Dogs often seek heat during the winter weather, so they might snuggle close to heating sources which can burn them. So, portable heaters and lamps should be out of dog’s reach.”

Dua said dogs could dehydrate just as quickly in the winter as in summer. So provide them plenty of fresh water.
