Ludhiana, June 17
The Ludhiana police claimed to have cracked an extortion case in which a man had made threatening calls to a city-based realtor and demanded Rs 2-crore ransom money. The suspects also threatened to kill him and his family if he did not pay the ransom money. After the matter came to the notice of the city police, the Police Commissioner asked Joint Commissioner of Police (City) Narinder Bhargav to solve the case.
The suspects have been identified as Sham Lal Motan of Jawahar Nagar Camp, who works as a property dealer in Harnam Nagar, Ravinder Kumar, alias Sonu, of Jassian road, who is also a property dealer, and Ravinder’s cousin Sunny Kumar of Balipur. Police Commissioner Kaustubh Sharma, Joint Commissioner of Police (City) Narinder Bhargav and CIA in-charge Inspector Beant Juneja held a press conference regarding the matter today.
Bhargav said Sham Lal was the key conspirator in the case as he was a good friend of the realtor-cum-complainant, Pooran Chand Kainth of Royal City, Jalandhar bypass.
“Sham knew that Pooran is a rich person. If they will make him a ransom call demanding Rs 2 crore posing as gangsters, he will easily give the money to save his as well his family members’ lives. Sham also lured another property dealer Ravinder and Ravinder’s cousin Sunny in the crime and promised them handsome share after getting Rs 2 crore ransom money,” said Bhargav.
Two accomplices of the key conspirator also snatched a mobile phone from some factory worker on June 11. The snatched mobile phone was used to make the ransom call.
Bhargav said after making the ransom call, the suspects also put the complainant’s car on fire on June 16. They again called him and said they had put his car on fire to show the trailer. If he would not pay the ransom money, they would kill him and his family members. They were notorious gangsters and they would kill him.
Friend turns foe
Joint Commissioner of Police (City) Narinder Bhargav said when the complainant got the ransom call, he discussed about it with his close friend Sham. The complainant’s friend told him that he should not lodge any police complaint. Rather, he should give the ransom money to the gangsters to save his as well as his family members’ lives.
Financial crunch the trigger behind crime
CIA in-charge Inspector Beant Juneja said the key conspirator, Sham Lal, had sent his two sons to Canada on study visa after spending huge money. As a result, he was facing financial crunch these days. The suspect knew about the influential status of realtor Pooran and he also knew that if the realtor will get the ransom call, he would immediately pay the money.
