Ludhiana, December 11

The Moti Nagar police registered a case against four persons of whom two posed themselves as a cop and journalist and extorted money from a city-based doctor. The booked persons are Manpreet Singh of GTB Nagar, Dharminder Singh of Kuldeep Nagar, Kaka and Gagan of Subash Nagar.

The complainant Manjey Chaudhary of Vishawkarma Colony told the police that he runs a clinic in this locality. On December 9, when he was treating his patients, a Swift Dzire car stopped outside his clinic and four persons entered the clinic. One turbaned man, wearing police uniform, was identified as Manpreet, while Dharminder, who posed himself as a journalist, was carrying the “press identity card” of some vernacular daily.

They told him that the condition of one of his patients had deteriorated and he was shifted to Apollo Hospital. Then they threatened him to give them Rs2 to Rs3 lakh, else “he might be in trouble and police action could be taken against him for not treating the patient carefully”.

“Fearing police action, I gave them Rs10,000 and told them to collect the remaining amount a day after. Later suspecting them to be fake, I approached the police and sought action against them,” alleged the complainant.

The police said the two accused, Manpreet and Dharminder, had been arrested and raids were on to nab the remaining accused. — TNS
