Farmers make Ladhowal toll plaza free over unmet demands
Toll plaza to remain free until demands are met, says Dilbag Singh of Bharatiya Kisan Mazdoor Union
As announced, farmer organisations made the Ladhowal toll plaza free for commuters on Monday. The protest comes over incomplete work on strengthening the embankment at Sasrali Colony and other villages affected by recent floods, as well as the poor condition of Rahon Road in Ludhiana.
The farmer groups have warned that if the administration does not meet their demands, the toll plaza will remain free indefinitely.
During the floods, the Sutlej River’s Dhussi Dam in Sasrali Colony was breached, causing significant damage to land and crops. After the rains receded, the administration reportedly halted work on repairing the Dhussi Dam.
Dilbag Singh, president of the Bharatiya Kisan Mazdoor Union, Punjab, said that farmers and villagers have been protesting for a long time and had submitted a memorandum of demands to the district administration. Despite this, the construction of the Dhussi embankment in Sasrali has not started, prompting frustration among locals.
He also pointed out that the Rahon Road is in poor condition, with construction work left incomplete. Multiple complaints to the administration have gone unaddressed.
He reiterated that the Ladhowal toll plaza will remain free until the administration fulfills the farmers’ demands.
