Every year, monsoon showers leave the city of Ludhiana inundated and turn its roads into pools of water that require quite an expertise to negotiate. Waterlogged roads are a daily occurrence in monsoon season in Ludhiana. Commuters and pedestrians suffer. The authorities promise solution every time the problem resurfaces. And the worst part is that the problem comes up with clockwork regularity and it eludes solution with equal constancy! Clearly, any ad hoc approach or political expediency would not do. The faulty drainage infrastructure needs long-term and permanent corrective measures. Stormwater infrastructure that is almost non-existent in the city needs to be made operational as well as efficient. Checking clogged sewers and drains, managing efficiently solid waste and sewage so that they do not affect stormwater drainage, clearing construction debris, preventing garbage from being dumped into drains are a few steps that if initiated may help in handling the problem of waterlogging. All these measures can be adopted only and only if the authorities concerned are serious about resolving the problem. Kneejerk reaction, lip-service will not lead to any solution!
