A total of 11 short films exploring different subjects were showcased at the Ishmeet Singh Music Institute on Sunday on the second day of the 4th Short Film Fest held at the institute in Ludhiana. The subjects ranged from tenuous human relationships to facetious categorisations based on externalities of human situation.

The films, with duration of 4-15 minutes, were original works of students from various institutes.

According to the organisers, as many as 126 entries were received, out of which 22 were finally shortlisted for screening in the fest.

The selection was done on the basis of camera work, time duration and originality, with preference for the works that were non-vulgar and non-violent. “The idea was to give a platform to creative individuals,” said Pardeep Singh from OURspaceCinema.

Environmental concerns were also showcased in the films. A short film ‘Ek Tara Hor’ explored the unholy nexus between the criminals and the law-enforcing agency. The climax of the film was a chilling reminder of the nexus between the police and the criminals.

Another interesting film ‘Perception’ focused on externalities and stereotyping and how we misinterpret, misunderstand and misjudge, viewing another person through the prism of our biases and prejudices. The short film ‘Dastaan 2’ was a multi-layered take on creativity and professional compulsions.

Other films dealt with the alienation and loneliness of senior citizens and also with social problems and issues that are very common and familiar and yet not easy to deal with.

“All films screened here may not be great. Nevertheless, it is a good initiative to organise such short film festivals in a city like Ludhiana. Youngsters get a platform to showcase their talent,” said one of the audience members.
