Commissioner of Police Swapan Sharma on Tuesday said the force ensured sustained enforcement and welfare-oriented proactive policing during the year concluding on Wednesday.
Senior police officials said they strengthened public safety and worked for eradication of drug menace as focus areas. According to the records, 1,218 cases were registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and 1,580 suspects were arrested over the year. They said huge quantities of contraband, including 32.789 kg heroin, 26.812 kg opium, 535.8 kg poppy husk and 100 kg ganja were seized, breaking the supply chain of drugs and narcotics. They said substantial drug money was recovered and properties worth Rs 11.4 crore were confiscated. The properties were attached after approval from the competent authorities in New Delhi, in connection with 14 cases under Section 68F of the NDPS Act.
The officials said 200 addicts, were willing to shun drugs and undergo treatment at de-addiction centres, were booked under section 64-A of the NDPS Act. A total of 2,947 addicts were provided treatment at Outpatient Opioid Assisted Treatment (OOAT) centres of the district.
The Ludhiana commissionerate oversaw demolition of 18 properties constructed by drug peddlers with ill-gotten money that acted as a deterrent for other drug peddlers, the officials said.
They said the police launched intensive cordon and search operations (CASO) under the supervision of Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav and Commissioner Sharma.
Police said drives against absconders resulted in the arrest of 381 proclaimed offenders. A number snatching and theft victims were relieved as 249 snatching cases were traced, leading to arrest of 525 accused, an 80 percent success rate. Valuables worth Rs 2.8 crore, including 219 vehicles, 780 mobile phones, 88 grams of gold ornaments, 60 grams of silver ornaments and Rs 63.21 lakh, were recovered during the year.
