The Ludhiana (rural) police have arrested four members of a notorious gang that has been involved in smuggling illicit liquor from neighbouring states.

Sixty boxes of Heer Sofi brand, to be sold in Haryana only, were seized from their possession by a team of police personnel, led by in-charge CIA Simarjit Singh, from the outskirts of Ramgarh Sivia village, near here, today. The police have also seized two vehicles used in the crime.

The suspects were identified as Shubham, alias Kaka, of Jagraon Road, Harvinder Singh Lalli of Bangawali village near Dhuri, Gurvinder Singh Guddu of Guru Nanak Pura and Hardeep Singh Happy of Mehal Kalan.

Senior Superintendent of Police, Ludhiana (rural), said a police team, supervised by SP(D) Rajbir Singh and DSP(D) Dilbagh Singh, had succeeded in nabbing the suspects on the basis of a tip-off and seized 720 bottles of liquor being brought in the region illegally. The suspects had modified Mahindra Bolero vehicles used in the crime to hide liquor boxes in specially designed cabins.

The suspects were booked under Sections 61-01-14 78(2) of the Excise Act at the Raikot police station.
