Gurdwara sewadar dies on Baisakhi while changing the chola of Nishan Sahib
The deceased was identified as Maninder Singh (40) and had been serving for 12 years
In a shocking incident, a sewadar involved in the Nishan Sahib's chola-changing service, fell from a height of 60 feet when a crane cable snapped on Tuesday morning. The incident took place on the occasion of Baisakhi at Gurdwara Singh Sabha, Kartar Nagar on Dugri Road in Ludhiana.
The deceased's brother, Gurpreet Singh, said that Maninder (40) had been changing the Nishan Sahib at the gurdwara Sahib for the past 12 years. He would devoutly participate in the chola-changing service every Sankranti and Baisakhi. On Tuesday morning, around 9 am, he went to offer a new chola to the Nishan Sahib.
According to eye witnesses, Maninder had successfully reached a height of 60 feet and had tied a knot in the Nishan Sahib when the iron wire of the crane — he was using to ascend — suddenly snapped.
Immediately after the accident, the devotees and volunteers present there rushed him to the nearest hospital in a bleeding condition, but his injuries were so severe that he died on the way. The doctors declared him brought dead.
Gurpreet Singh said, "My brother served the Guru's house selflessly. Little did we know that today's service would be his last."
Maninder Singh leaves behind a large family. He owns a grocery store to support the family. He is survived by his wife and a 10-year-old son, who is currently in school. He also has two brothers.
