The 9th Guru Gobind Singh Hockey Championship, organised by the Ludhiana Sports Welfare Association, began with great fanfare today at the Olympian Prithipal Singh Hockey Stadium, PAU, Ludhiana.

The event was inaugurated by Ashok Prashar, MLA of Ludhiana Central constituency, by releasing balloons. On this occasion, he not only released a souvenir detailing the achievements of the Ludhiana Sports Welfare Association, but also honoured four personalities for their excellent services to the world of sports with special awards.

These included Dronacharya Awardee coach Baldev Singh, district sports officer Kuldeep Chugh, state sports committee member (Education Department) Ajitpal Singh and Deputy District Education Officer (Sports) Kulvir Singh. The MLA also contributedRs 1 lakh for the Guru Gobind Singh Hockey Championship, while JP Singh of Ram Textile Company also provided financial assistance of Rs 51,000.

In the preliminary league matches for the U-17 age group today, Jarkhar Hockey Academy defeated Qila Raipur 4-1, Malwa Academy defeated Ghawaddi School 4-0, Guru Tegh Bahadur Academy, Chacharari, defeated Nankana Sahib Public School, Amargarh, 1-0, and Baba Kirpal Das Academy Hera defeated Ek Noor Academy, Tahing, Phillaur, 1-0, all advancing to the next round.

In the girls’ category, Round Glass, Malerkotla, defeated DAV School, Pakhowal, 3-0, and Mundian Kalan Hockey Centre defeated Chacharari academy 2-0.
