Healthy diet must to reduce risk of kidney diseases, say docs

LUDHIANA: The Department of Dietetics organised 4th CNE (Continuing Nutrition Education) in collaboration with the Department of Nephrology, Dayanand Medical College and Hospital on latest advances in renal nutrition, to raise awareness about the importance of nutrition to avoid chronic kidney diseases.

The Department of Dietetics organised 4th CNE (Continuing Nutrition Education) in collaboration with the Department of Nephrology, Dayanand Medical College and Hospital on latest advances in renal nutrition, to raise awareness about the importance of nutrition to avoid chronic kidney diseases.

Dietician Shilpa Joshi from Mumbai, Dr Bhuvaneshwari Shankar from Chennai and Dietician Zamurrud M Patel from Mumbai shared their experience with delegates. More than 225 dieticians and dietetics students from various institutes from all over Punjab, Haryana, Jammu Kashmir, Himachal and Chandigarh participated in the event. Dr Sandeep Puri, Principal DMCH, in his address, said obesity was the baseline of all the diseases.

Dean Dr Rajoo Singh Chhina urged the audience to use antibiotics appropriately to secure good health without causing any hazard to the kidney and other vital organs. He further appealed to avoid self-medication and suggested to adopt fiber rich food, cereals, fruits and vegetables rather than resorting to pills, powders etc.

Dr Vikas Makkar, Professor and Head, Department of Nephrology, DMCH, addressed the audience about how renal impairment occurred due to hypertension.

Senior dietitian, Department of Dietetics Shaveta Batta, RD and organising secretary suggested, “A little modification in lifestyle can help to maintain a healthy body. Diet plays a key role in maintaining good nutrition in pre and post kidney transplant to stop further damage to the kidney.

She also discussed the importance of fluid, electrolytic balance and the ways to maintain it. She insisted the importance of adopting healthy nutrition regime to look better, think better and perform better.”
