High drama was witnessed at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) when the Vice-Chancellor (VC) Baldev Singh Dhillon along with other officials tried to enter Thapar Hall, where protesters were staging a dharna today.
Protesting employees had gathered in large numbers and blocked the gates of the Thapar Hall (administrative building) at 9 am. As a result, the staff was not able to enter the building and all employees, including female staff, gathered there.
When the VC and other officials tried to enter the hall, protesters lay down on the road to stop them.
However, the VC along with other officials crossed over them and entered the building.
The act of the Vice-Chancellor was strongly condemned by protesting employees as many of them were wearing turbans and requested the VC to not cross over them, said Baldev Singh Walia, president, PAU Employees Union.
Afterwards a massive rally was organised and agitating employees kept the gates of Thapar Hall blocked. Baldev Singh Walia and Manmohan Singh, general secretary, while addressing the gathering said the adamant behaviour of the authorities has created this situation.
The Registrar, RS Sidhu, said the university authorities are sympathetic to the demands of the employees.
Some demands are not only of PAU and other institutions also and the government is considering the case and demands are being pursued by the PAU.
