In Malerkotla, Kataria calls upon locals to follow teachings of Lord Mahavira
Governor paid respects to revered Jain saints and emphasised on the vow of celibacy, renunciation of personal possessions and abandoning worldly affairs
Governor Gulab Chand Kataria on Sunday called upon the people to follow teachings of Lord Mahavira and shun social evils and free the society from violence and hatred.
Addressing a gathering of Jainism followers on Jain Bhagwati Diksha Samaroh, organised by SS Jain Sabha, Kataria highlighted the significance restraint, tolerance and discipline.
He was accompanied by his wife, Anita Kataria. The Governor paid respects to revered Jain saints and emphasised on the vow of celibacy, renunciation of personal possessions and abandoning worldly affairs, including duties and family ties.
Hailing Lord Mahavira’s sacrifices and contributions, Kataria said that elements of the Jainism — ahimsa (non-violence), satya (truth), brahmacharya (celibacy), aparigraha (non-possessiveness) and asteya (non-stealing) — were universal solution for a lot of issues plaguing the society.
Kataria hailed Jain acharyas and their disciples for spreading the teachings of Lord Mahavira for centuries, and said they enriched the Indian culture with invaluable and eternal values.
The Governor called upon the residents to vow to shun at least one social evil before the conclusion of the function.
Earlier, government personnel, led by Deputy Commissioner Viraj S Tidke and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Gagan Ajit Singh, presented state honours to the Governor at the PM Shri Government Senior Secondary School, Bhogiwal.
