Int’l Childhood Cancer Day observed at DMCH

LUDHIANA: An awareness walk was organised at Rose Garden in the early morning by the Department of Paediatrics of Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) to mark the International Childhood Cancer Day.

An awareness walk was organised at Rose Garden in the early morning by the Department of Paediatrics of Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) to mark the International Childhood Cancer Day.

The walk was well attended by people from all walks of life, members of the DMC Youth Club and Leukemia Crusaders, an NGO.

According to Dr Shruti Kakkar, in charge, thalassaemia unit, February 15 was marked as International Childhood Cancer Day every year. “The purpose of observing this day is to create awareness among the general public to identify symptoms of the disease in early stage and treat it accordingly,” she said.

“According to recently-published reports, the worldwide incidence of childhood cancer is increasing every year both in developed and developing countries. The theme of International Childhood Cancer Day this year is ‘Advance cure and transform care’,” she added.

A role-play was also held at the paediatrics OPD block of the hospital in which students of College of Nursing made the people aware of important aspects of childhood cancer. The role play was appreciated by those present on the occasion, including Principal Dr Sandeep Puri, Medical Superintendent Dr Sandeep Sharma, Prof and head of the Paediatrics Department, Dr Puneet Aulakh Pooni and other faculty members.

Dr Shruti Kakkar asked students of the College of Nursing to choose paediatric oncology as a part of their stream in their profession.
