Jagraon-Chandigarh-Jagraon: Migrant’s family 14-hour ordeal for rabies tests
Family alleges doctors at Jagraon Civil Hospital "needlessly" referred them to PGI, Chandigarh
A migrant family from Jagraon alleged that the doctors at the local Civil Hospital referred all seven of them to a Chandigarh hospital for rabies test, only to be told that there was no need got them to be referred in the first place.
According to the family members, they approached the local Civil Hospital and were instantly referred to Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh. They alleged they had to go through an unnecessary 14-hour ordeal because of this.
The family’s patriarch, Santosh, said he has a pet dog and the children play with it.
“One of my children was oozing saliva so I took my family to the hospital to clear my doubts about an infection,” he said.
“The attending doctor hurriedly arranged for an ambulance and sent us all to PGI. There, the doctors checked us and asked us not to worry. They asked us to get a few blood tests done in Jagraon. The doctors informed us that there was no need for us to come to PGI at all,” Santosh added.
Santosh added that after the events of the day, they were being ignored by many in their locality due to social stigma.
Santosh claimed that a dog bit one of his children year ago, but the latter did not exhibit any symptoms in the meanwhile. “I will file a harassment complaint against the authorities concerned,” he added.
Dr Gurwinder Kaur, Senior Medical Officer, said it was not confirmed if any of the family members had rabies.
“More tests will be done on Monday,” she added.
