Jarkhar Academy and Rampur Chhana won their respective ties in sub-junior hockey on Day 1 of the Jarkhar Sports Festival, popularly known as Rural Mini Olympics, said officials.

While Jarkhar Academy defeated Kila Raipur 6-1, Rampur Chhana won 3-1 against Sajli. In the girl’s category, PIS Bathinda and Punjabi University, Patiala, advanced to the next round with convincing victories. The senior boys’ hockey match between Jalandhar and Kila Raipur ended with a 5-5 tie.

In boys’ football, Bhaini Arora, Talwandi Rai, Bhutta, Gaggar and Gujarwal registered wins in their respective matches. In girls’ tug of war, Dashmesh Public School, Kad, overpowered World Millennium School, Ranjit Avenue.

The officials said the results are being declared late due to administrative delays.

Earlier, the 38th edition of the games kicked off amid much fanfare at Jarkhar village on Ludhiana-Malerkotla road.

A colourful opening ceremony was organised at Jarkhar Sports Stadium on Friday.

The inaugural ceremony was attended by MLA Jeevan Singh Sangowal and Malkit Singh Thind, chairperson, Punjab State Commission for Backward Classes.

In the afternoon session, Amloh MLA Gurinder Singh Gary Warring and MLA Daljit Singh Bhola Grewal were the chief guests.

In the evening session, Punjab Cabinet Minister Tarunpreet Singh Sond interacted with players, and lauded the efforts of Mata Sahib Kaur Charitable Trust and Jarkhar Hockey Academy. He announced a grant of Rs 10 lakh for expansion of Jarkhar Stadium.
