Ludhiana, February 11

The junior hockey titles at the two-day 36th Jarkhar Sports Festival were won by the Jarkhar Academy (boys) and Rail Coach Factory Kapurthala (girls) today. The event, organised by the Mata Sahib Kaur Sports Charitable Trust, concluded at Jarkhar village, about 15 km from here, today.

The RCF Kapurthala girls got the better of Punjabi University, Patiala, winning 3-1. In the boys final, Jarkhar Academy defeated Amargarh Academy 5-2 to clinch the title. In the senior hockey event, Kila Raipur outwitted Malwa Academy, Ludhiana, 3-1 to win the men’s title.

In kabaddi (open), Anandpur village prevailed over Ghaloti village 19-16 to win the Naib Singh Grewal Jodhan Cup. In wrestling, competing for th Rustam-e-Punjab award, Jassa Mander romped home and Noor Alamgir secured the second position. Taranvir Alamgir pipped Abdul Mander in the contest for the Sher-e-Punjab title.

The organisers honoured six prominent persons in recognition of their outstanding contributions in their respective fields — former kabaddi star Manjit Singh Mohla Khadoor; Surinder Kaur, headmistress of Government School, Jarkhar; sports promoter Gurjit Singh Hakimpur; SS Saini, pioneer of Ropar Hawks Hockey Club; Gurjatinder Singh Randhawa, chief editor of Punjab Mail (USA); and Punjabi singer Harjit Harman.

Harjit Harman entertained the spectators with his popular numbers. Punjab Minister for Agriculture Gurmeet Singh Khudian gave away the prizes to the winners. He also announced a grant of Rs 2 lakh for the organisers of the event.
