Ludhiana, August 8

Lok Insaaf Party leader Gagandeep Singh, alias Sunny Kainth, and party workers were allegedly attacked by Congress workers near the residence of Ludhiana MP Ravneet Singh Bittu today. Kainth has alleged that the Congress workers came out of Bittu’s residence and they attacked him and LIP workers in the presence of the police.

Kainth accused the Congress workers of tossing his turban as well as those of his aides. The victims later went to the Police Commissioner office. Party MLA Balwinder Singh Bains also reached there and they together staged a protest.

Kainth said he, along with his party workers, collected money donated by people at Bharat Nagar Chowk today and they wanted to offer the collection to Bittu for purchasing a ventilator for the Civil Hospital, Ludhiana. “When we went to meet MP Bittu, we were attacked. An SHO had earlier asked us to come in a group of five persons only. But hundreds of Congress workers were already gathered at the Bittu’s residence. We want that an FIR be registered against the assailants and the SHO suspended,” he said.

Balwinder Singh Bains said: “Our party men wanted to raise before Ravneet Bittu their demand for purchasing a ventilator for the Civil Hospital, by offering him money collected from people. But the LIP team was attacked by Congress workers. They tossed the LIP workers’ turbans and tore their clothes. The assailants came out of Bittu’s house. It is a murder of democracy. Action should be taken against the assailants and the SHO, who supported them, must be suspended,” he said.

Meanwhile, Bittu said he was not present in Ludhiana due to his knee injury. “I had no information that LIP workers wanted to meet me today. I learned that all what happened today was due to old rivalry between Sunny Kainth and some workers of the Youth Congress. Sunny was earlier associated with the Youth Congress. A video has also gone viral in which an LIP worker is seen attacking Congress workers. Nobody has the right to attack anyone. Whenever I return to the city, I will visit Kainth’s home and hear his suggestions too,” said Bittu.

Division 8 SHO Gernail Singh said: “Both LIP and Congress workers have filed complaints against each other. We are going to lodge an FIR against both parties for clash and violating the guidelines relating to Covid-19,” he said.

On being asked about the allegations levelled by the LIP leaders against him, the SHO said those allegations were false and baseless. “The police asked the LIP workers to hand over the memorandum to them as MP Ravneet Singh Bittu was not available there today. Meanwhile, workers of the LIP and the Congress started arguing with each other and they entered into a clash,” said the SHO.
