A family from Lohatbaddi village in the district is facing a double whammy after their only son Manjot Singh (21), who had gone to Dubai in search of greener pastures over a year ago, was allegedly stabbed to death by unknown assailants on June 18. His body is yet to be repatriated.

As the family is already struggling financially due to substantial loans taken to send Manjot abroad through a travel agent, arranging funds to bring the body is compounding the situation for his ageing parents.

Residents, led by village lambardar Atma Singh, have urged the Union and Punjab governments to help the family and facilitate the repatriation of the body.

Dalbag Singh and his wife Bhinder Kaur regret allowing their son to pursue a professional career as a cleaner in the UAE some 14 months ago. The lambardar, a close relative of the family, coordinated with the deceased’s friends after learning of the incident on June 20 to locate his body, which was later found at a hospital.

“For there was no one at home to look after Dalbag and his wife, we kept trying for the repatriation of the body and informed them of his death today,” said Lohatbaddi, adding that the parents were previously informed that Manjot Singh was injured in an accident.

The aggrieved family has demanded senior UAE police officials investigate the sequence of incidents that led to Manjot’s death from stab injuries. Meanwhile, Fatehgarh Sahib MP Dr Amar Singh Boparai said he had raised the issue with Union Foreign Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar.

“After learning about the family’s suffering, I spoke with the minister, who assured me that he would coordinate with authorities concerned in Dubai to expedite the process of repatriating the body,” the legislator added.
