As many as 120 poor patients have got Rs 3.55-crore financial aid from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) in Ludhiana in less than one year, official figures have revealed.

Of the total beneficiaries, a maximum of 33 have got Rs 99 lakh, with an allocation of Rs 3 lakh each, on the recommendation of Rajya Sabha MP Sanjeev Arora.

The needy patients, who were mainly suffering from heart, kidney and cancer ailments, besides acid attack as well, were under treatment at the Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) here.

These patients got the financial assistance, which was aimed at partially defraying expenses for their medical treatment, which they were unable to bear, on the recommendations of 20 MPs.

Besides the 33 needy patients getting Rs 3 lakh each on the recommendation of the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) member in the Upper House of Parliament from Punjab, 15 cases were recommended by local Congress MP Ravneet Singh Bittu, 12 by Gurdaspur BJP MP Sunny Deol, 10 by Hoshiarpur BJP MP Som Parkash, who is Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, eight by Jalandhar AAP MP Sushil Kumar Rinku, seven each by Fatehgarh Sahib Congress MP Amar Singh and Faridkot Congress MP Muhammad Sadiq, five by Khadoor Sahib Congress MP Jasbir Singh Gill, four each by Amritsar Congress MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla and Sangrur SAD (Amritsar) MP Simranjit Singh Mann, three each by Jammu BJP MP Jugal Kishore Sharma and Ferozepur SAD MP Sukhbir Singh Badal, two by Anandpur Sahib Congress MP Manish Tewari, one each by Hamirpur BJP MP Anurag Singh Thakur, who is Union Minister of Information, Broadcasting, Sports and Youth Affairs, AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal, Kangra BJP MP Kishan Kapoor, Kurukshetra BJP MP Nayab Singh Saini, Bathinda SAD MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal, Patiala Congress MP Preneet Kaur and Rae Bareli Congress MP Sonia Gandhi.

Speaking to The Tribune, here on Tuesday, MP Sanjeev Arora said he came to know about the PMNRF scheme in October last only following which he had recommended a total to 37 cases of poor patients for financial assistance and 33 had already been sanctioned with the release of Rs 3 lakh to each of the beneficiaries while the rest four cases were also in the advanced stage of sanction.

In one such case, a woman patient from Tanda in Hoshiarpur had approached Arora for seeking financial assistance for the treatment of pancreaticobiliary carcinoma ailment for which she was asked to deposit Rs 6.5 lakh at the DMCH here. However, she got Rs 3 lakh from the PMNRF soon after Arora recommended her case to the PMO.

  • The Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) was established entirely with public contributions and does not get any budgetary support.
  • PMNRF accepts voluntary contributions from individuals, organisations, trusts, companies and institutions etc.
  • All contributions towards PMNRF are exempted from Income Tax under section 80(G).
  • The resources of the PMNRF are utilised to render immediate relief to families of those killed in natural calamities such as floods, cyclones and earthquakes.
  • It assists partially to defray the expenses for medical treatment such as heart surgery, kidney transplantation, cancer treatment of needy people and acid attack.
  • Donations are accepted through BHIM/ UPI, credit cards / debit cards/net banking accounts of Indian banks only.
