Ludhiana district today breached the 1,000 mark in Covid-19 cases. With 77 fresh cases, the highest in a single day, the number of cases has jumped to 1,070.

A Covid patient lost her life in the district. The woman (70), a resident of Gandhi Nagar, was admitted to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital. She was also a diabetic.

Of 25 deaths reported so far, 13 are from Ludhiana East, eight from Ludhiana West, two from Jagraon and one each from Payal and Khanna.

26 jail inmates positive

Among 77 fresh cases, 26 are the inmates of the Central Jail here. The Civil Surgeon, Dr Rajesh Bagga, said all inmates of the Central Jail were asymptomatic.

“When they were tested at Borstal Jail on June 9, they all were negative. After their quarantine period was over, they were shifted to the Central Jail. The test of 32 inmates was repeated at the Central Jail, of which 26 were found infected. Five inmates tested positive on July 3 after they were shifted to Central Jail from the Borstal Jail,” said Dr Bagga.

The Borstal Jail is a special Covid quarantine where the accused from all districts of the state are brought for screening. They are kept here under quarantine for 14 days. After the quarantine period is over, they are sent to their respective districts, if they test negative.

Healthcare workers vulnerable

The number of healthcare workers testing positive is also increasing with each passing today. Today, six healthcare workers were found infected at Model Town, Lalton Khurd, Sadhu Sundar Singh Colony, Habib Road, Khud Mohalla and Lal Kothi. They all work at private hospitals.

ASI, ex-chief of Youth Congress infected

A 50-year-old ASI from Division No. 5 tested positive. A former president of the Youth Congress is among the fresh cases.

Many contacts of positive persons were found infected at Dashmesh Nagar, Bhamian Khurd, Jagraon, Shastri Nagar, Bhagwan Chowk, near Deepak Cinema, Urban Vihar in Dugri, New Janta Nagar, New Sundar Nagar, Texla Colony, Rishi Nagar and Deep Nagar.

New cases were reported from Gandhi Nagar, Nai Abadi Khanna, Gandhi Nagar Shivpuri, Khanna (three), Jamalpur Colony in Ludhiana and Shastri Nagar. A 26-year-old pregnant woman from Killa Mohalla and 38-year-old man from Omaxe Residency (with overseas travel history) also tested positive.

578 active cases

Five patients are on ventilator in the district at present. There are 578 active cases in the district. Today, 163 people were home-quarantined. At present, 2,631 are active home-quarantine cases and 242 NRIs are in quarantines at government and private facilities.
