Ludhiana: Farmers flay police action on peaceful protesters
Urge state govt to ensure adequate canal water supply
The Bhartiya Kisan Union (Kadian) on Monday condemned what it said was “inhuman police action” on youngsters and contractual employees peacefully protesting for jobs and regularisation.
During a state-level monthly meeting chaired by state president Harmeet Singh Kadian, the union assured the protesters that the Kadian faction would continue to stand firmly by their side.
Turning to agrarian issues, the attendees urged the state government to ensure adequate canal water at the tail ends of distributaries, and outlets of minors and branches. Another resolution sought immediate release of the government’s share of Rs 68.3 per quintal from the dues of sugarcane growers stuck with mills.
The union pressed for a notification on enhanced cooperative credit limits for member farmers, and called for implementation of the DS scheme to increase agricultural motor load. In a separate resolution, BKU (Kadian) urged the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) chairperson to ensure transformers stolen from farmers’ tubewells are promptly replaced and strict action is taken over theft of wires and transformer oil.
The farmers warned of intensifying the struggle if the demands were not met.
