Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Manoranjan Kalia on Tuesday said the Congress and other Opposition parties were the reason why the Bill seeking reservation for women failed in the Parliament.

The Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill-2026 seeking 33 per cent reservation for women and increase in number of Lok Sabha seats failed in the House recently.

Kalia said as the Centre's efforts to grant women the benefits earlier than expectedfailed, the reservation can now only be realised after 2036.

He, however, said the credit goes to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for getting the ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam’ passed in the Parliament. It cleared the floor in September 2023, ending 27 years legislative struggles to reserve 33 per cent seats in the Lok Sabha and state Assemblies for women, Kalia added.

Kalia was accompanied by BJP’s district president Rajnish Dhiman.
