Ludhiana: Samvidhan Bachao Morcha protest seeks implementation of new UGC equity rules
The protesters pointed out that the Supreme Court had put a stay order on the equity rules enacted by the UGC
Activists of Samvidhan Bachao Morcha on Monday organised a rally here, seeking implementation of new equity rules for University Grants Commission (UGC) to safeguard the interests of students from Schedules Castes and Tribes.
The protesters pointed out that the Supreme Court had put a stay order on the equity rules enacted by the UGC, and pressed for lifting of the stay to ensure protection of vulnerable students.
According to the protesters, it will prevent discrimination against student from the underprivileged communities.
They alleged the discrimination in colleges and universities had not stopped and if the new UGC law was implemented, it could have a significant impact.
“Our second demand is that the SC/ST Commission, established by the Centre, should be reformed and strengthened. Police, and even judiciary, do not pay heed to the SC/ST Commission. The judiciary has said in several decisions that the commission can only make recommendations, and can’t register an FIR. The police, taking recourse to the court, say that only they can investigate a crime, and not the commission. What is the benefit of the commission? If the Centre orders an investigation and gives the commission the power to register an FIR, discrimination can be eradicated from the country,” a protester said.
