Cupid is in the air with Valentine’s Day falling on Saturday. Lovebirds across the city are making special efforts to make the day memorable. From school and college students to the committed couples, newly-weds and even for those in their middle age, the day holds another excuse to celebrate love and companionship.

Markets, restaurants and malls are soaked in Valentine vibes. Heart-shaped balloons, soft toys, roses, greeting cards and teddy bears adorn shops across the city. The youth were seen thronging markets to pick up gifts for their loved ones.

Boys have been making the rounds of prominent girls’ colleges, including Khalsa College for Women, Guru Nanak Girls College and Government College for Girls.

Rahul, a student of SCD Government College, says that despite repeated attempts earlier, he has not been able to convince a girl of his feelings. “This time, I will express my inclination towards her. I hope she does not refuse, and even if she does, I will respect her decision. But I will certainly put my best foot forward tomorrow,” says Rahul, who was spotted buying heart-shaped soft toys from the Sarabha Nagar market.

Meanwhile, a student of Khalsa College for Women says she has received flowers and a card from her boyfriend but cannot take them home. “I kept the flowers with a friend. Though we do not see a future together, there is no harm in being friends,” she says.

Several hotels and restaurants in the city have been specially decked up to exude Valentine charm. Rashmi, a kitty party enthusiast, says she has attended three kitty parties in the past week, and each venue was beautifully decorated to reflect the Valentine Week theme. “It creates a pleasant ambience. The restaurants understand the mood of the visitors and invest in décor to attract customers,” she adds.

A married couple says Valentine’s Day offers an opportunity to express emotions that often remain unspoken. “It should not be taken in the wrong sense. Sometimes we hesitate to express love, appreciation or gratitude to our partner or friend. The day provides a chance to connect emotionally,” they say
