Ludhiana’s Lakshay smashes way to bronze in Uganda badminton championship
Jumps to World Rank 106 from 120
In a remarkable achievement, 20-year-old Lakshay Sharma of Ludhiana has clinched a bronze medal in the men’s badminton singles category during the prestigious Uganda International Challenge World Ranking Tournament held at Lugogo Indoor Stadium, Kampala, from February 18 to 22.
His stellar performance not only earned him a podium finish, but also propelled him from World Rank 120 to 106 in the latest rankings.
The highly-competitive tournament featured 126 players from across the globe, including 20 participants from India, making Lakshay’s achievement all the more commendable.
He began his impressive campaign in the round of 32 with a hard-fought victory over Italy’s Fabio Caponio (World Rank 144).
After dropping the first game (15-21), the young Indian shuttler staged a strong comeback to win the next two games (21-14, 21-9).
In the pre-quarter-final, Lakshay displayed complete dominance against India’s Gagan Balyan (World Rank 249), sealing a comfortable straight-game win (21-14, 21-8).
The quarter-final encounter proved to be a major breakthrough as Lakshay upset Kazakhstan’s Dmitriy Panarin (World Rank 88).
Despite losing the opening game, he showed grit and resilience to claim the next two games (21-14, 21-11) and secure his berth in the semi-finals.
In the semi-final clash, Lakshay fought valiantly but lost to Australia’s Karono in straight games (17-21, 13-21), settling for the bronze.
This marks Lakshay’s second bronze medal at an international challenge tournament.
He had earlier secured a bronze in Cameroon, steadily building his reputation on the global badminton stage.
Lakshay, who is currently pursuing a BA arts (final semester) course at Chandigarh University, trains under the guidance of his father Mangat Rai Sharma, an NIS-qualified national badminton coach.
His disciplined training regimen and international exposure have significantly contributed to his rapid rise in World Rankings.
His father said, with his eyes firmly set on winning a medal at the Olympics, Lakshay continued to emerge as one of India’s brightest young badminton prospects.
