The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has urged the Punjab Government to make 30-bed maternity hospital in Subhash Nagar, that falls in the Ludhiana East assembly segment, operational immediately.

The hospital building was constructed and handed over to the Health Department in September 2016 but the same has not been made functional til now, said former legislator and president of district SAD Ranjit Singh Dhillon in a memorandum submitted to the Punjab Chief Minister and the Health Minister through the district administration here today.

Dhillon said two 30-bed maternity hospitals were planned and constructed in the Ludhiana East segment during the previous SAD-BJP regime. While the one in Sector 32 EWS Colony had started functioning with necessary equipment, medical and paramedical staff, the other located in Subhash Nagar was yet to commence working. He said the duly completed building was handed over to the Health Department but till now no doctors and supporting staff had been deployed nor had any equipment been provided to the hospital.

The SAD leader said the area had predominantly migrant and poor population who were in dire need of healthcare facilities as most people could not afford expensive treatment at private hospitals. “Making government maternity hospital operational is need of the hour and it must be started without any further delay,” said the memorandum.

Among others present on the occasion were Tarsem Singh Bhinder, Rachpal Singh Fauji, Mukhtiar Singh Cheema, Nek Singh Sekhewal, Naval Kishore Jain, Dr Ashwani Passi, Kmaljit Singh Nikku Grewal, Ranjit Singh Bajaj, Jasdev Tiwari and Aman Pannu.
