Office-bearers of group associated with the Punjab Palledar Union, Ahmedgarh, expressed their desire to be made ambassadors of the government’s drive against drug addiction as they been have been opposing abuse of drugs and ritually distributing desi ghee among their members for last four decades.
The idea to be associated with Drug Abuse Prevention Officer ( DAPO ) movement was expressed during a function held at Dehliz road on Sunday. Former president Municipal Council Jatinder Bhola presided over the function and Teji Kamalpuri, PA to Surjit Singh Dhiman, MLA Amargarh, was the chief guest on the occasion.
Convener of the function Deepak Sharma said activists of the local unit of the union had distributed packets of five kg desi ghee to 120 members of their outfit during the annual event. The office-bearers led by president Iqbal Khan of Dhaler village announced to spread awareness about causes and consequences of drug abuse and associate with the DAPO movement of the state government led by Chief Minister Captain Amrinder Singh. Appreciating gesture shown by the organisers Teji Kamalpuri and Bhola said balanced diet and abstinence from drug abuse sustained the families of labourers.
President Iqbal Singh recollected that the event was the brain child of late Harbans Lal Gautam, who motivated then office bearers of the outfit to gift desi ghee and other nutritious items as ‘bonus’ every winter.
“Successive management committees of the outfit have been perpetuating the event as it has enabled us take care of our health besides providing nutritious food to our families,” said Iqbal Singh reiterating union’s stand to associate with any movement launched by the government against the menace of drug addiction.
