Malerkotla residents concerned about kin in West Asia

Locals have expressed concerned over the safety and well-being of their family members settled in the tense West Asia, including Gulf nations.

A large number of people from Malerkotla, a Muslim-dominated region, are settled in the nations that are currently on the receiving end of US-Israel hostilities.

Faqir Mohammad, former panchayat member of Rohira village in Ahmedgarh sub-division, said several people had contacted him seeking help.

“Though most of them were in contact with their kin, they wanted to know the exact scenario amid escalation of hostilities,” he added.

Along with hope for their kin to return home safely, the locals also wished that normalcy returns to the regions at the earliest.

The administration has called upon residents not to panic over rumours and contact government personnel and administrative officers concerned for any assistance. The administration issued a list of emergency contact details in various countries in the affected zone.

Prabhjot Singh Battu, a Non-Resident Indian (NRI) based in the US, said some of his friends were standard in Dubai

“Even I could have been stranded somewhere had I not chosen a longer route from the US to India,” said Battu, who hails from Green Avenue locality in Ahmedgarh.

He added that he had to shell out extra to avoid the airspace in the affected nations. Battu said he took the decision as he come to know about the situation in West Asia after reading news at Hong Kong on Sunday.

Viraj S Tidke, Deputy Commissioner, and Gagan Ajit Singh, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), urged the residents not to panic and exercise caution.
