Malerkotla residents launch drive to conserve fuel amid tensions in W Asia

Various social organisations here have launched a campaign to sensitise locals on the need of conserving resources, especially crude oil products such as petrol and diesel, keeping in view the escalating tensions in West Asia.

They urged locals to keep use of four-wheelers to an optimum and pool vehicles on long tours, whenever possible.

Beant Kinger, social activist, said the campaign was launched apprehending a fuel shortage if normalcy does not return to West Asian countries for a while.

As part of the campaign, the locals were urged to avoid unnecessary travel and use public transport for inter-city trips.

Arvind Maavi, president, District Bar Association, hailed the people who have come forward to sensitise the masses.

Dist Bar association extends support

“Though the Centre claims it has oil reserves for more than 50 days and is seeking alternative import sources, we should all try to minimise wasteful use of petrol and diesel,” said Maavi, maintaining that members of the association had vowed to support the campaign.

The activists called upon residents not to indulge in panic buying and hoarding of fuel.

A lot of locals, especially traders and salaried individuals, regularly commute between Malerkotla and Khanna, Ludhiana, Patiala, Sangrur, Barnala and Raikot, among others.

Though public transport is available between all major towns and cities, people prefer to use their private vehicles.
