The police today arrested a man on the charge of killing a woman at Gurmail Nagar, Daba. Upinder Verma, alias Lala (40), of Shimalpuri, strangled the woman after she rejected his sexual advances.

The DCP (Detective), SS Dhindsa, and ADCP 2 Jaskiranjit Singh Teja addressed a press conference on the matter. Dhindsa said on November 9, Upinder had gone to deceased Pratima’s (27) house. He had reportedly lent Rs 1 lakh to her husband Sanjiv Kumar.

The suspect asked the woman to return his money or submit to his sexual advances. When the woman refused and raised the alarm, he strangled her with her dupatta.

Upinder called the deceased’s husband and informed him that his wife had fallen unconscious and he was taking her to a hospital. Later, he said the doctors declared her brought dead.

Initially, the police initiated inquest proceedings under section 174, CrPC. When the post-mortem cited strangulation as the cause of her death, a murder case was registered.
