The police have booked a man after his wife committed suicide by jumping into a canal. The woman, identified as Monica, a resident of Tajpur Road, jumped into the canal near Neelon on Chandigarh Road yesterday.
The police today registered a case of abetment of suicide against her husband, Dilbag Singh, a resident of Moti Nagar area, on the basis of a complaint by the victim’s father. The suspect has absconded.
In her statement to the police, the woman’s father, Surinderpal Singh, said his daughter Monica was married to Dilbag Singh about one and a half years ago. According to Surinderpal, Dilbag started harassing his daughter after marriage due to which she left her husband’s house a few days ago.
“But Dilbag continued to harass my daughter over the phone. Yesterday morning, Monica left home for some work but she did not return. In the evening, I received a call from the mobile of my daughter and an unidentified caller informed me that a woman had jumped into the canal near Neelon and she had drowned,” said Surinderpal.
The investigating officer, ASI Rachpal Singh, said: “We conducted raids at the suspect’s house but he was not found there. He has absconding,” he added.
