Delivering the verdict, the court held that the prosecution had successfully proved the charges levelled against the accused . The court has also imposed a fine of Rs 11,000 on the convict.
The case against the accused was registered at Haibowal PS on May 18, 2017, on the statement of his wife Shivani, who had suffered multiple injuries in the assault.
According to the prosecution, ASI Ram Kishan, accompanied by HC Amrik Singh and Constable Jeetu Ram, received information through the Police Control Room on May 18, 2017, regarding the admission of Shivani to Civil Hospital, Ludhiana. After obtaining fitness clearance from the attending doctor, the police recorded her statement.
Shivani stated that she had married Tarun Kumar two years earlier and had a son from the marriage. She alleged that her husband was not working, frequently quarrelled with her, and would often leave home for days. She was living separately at the time of the incident, while her son was staying with her parents in Amritsar.
On May 17, 2017, at around 6.30 pm, the accused allegedly called her to the house of one Vinod Prashar, located opposite her residence, and demanded Rs 5,000. When she refused, he reportedly took out a knife and attacked her, causing injuries on the left side of her neck. She was rushed to the civil hospital by Prashar and his wife. Medical examination revealed four injuries on her body.
Initially, a case was registered for causing injuries, and the weapon was seized. However, on May 25, 2017, Shivani recorded a supplementary statement, leading to the addition of attempt to murder charges. After examining the evidence, the court held him guilty and awarded seven years’ imprisonment.
