Nancy Grewal death: Mother accuses hardliners in Canada of murder; ancestral Ludhiana village residents tight-lipped

Residents of Narangwal village in Ludhiana district, the ancestral home of slain social media influencer Nancy Grewal, are somber but largely tight-lipped about her death, which is alleged to have been linked to her outspoken nature.

Leaders from various political and social organisations have condemned the assassination, arguing that governance worldwide is increasingly heading toward anarchy.

While locals could provide little information about Nancy’s parents or grandparents, they confirmed that her family was closely related to former Panch Ranjit Singh Grewal. The family later moved to nearby Jodhan village on the Pakhowal-Ludhiana road. Some family members reportedly reside in Jalandhar.

Prabhdeep Narangwal, a former Zila Parishad member, said Nancy had publicly disclosed her Narangwal roots in a video five years ago.

“After watching the video, I verified the information with my late father, former Chairman of the Market Committee Kilaraipur, Manmohan Singh Narangwal. He confirmed that Nancy’s parents were closely related to the family of former Panch Ranjit Singh Grewal,” Prabhdeep said, expressing regret that Nancy was killed despite being at what should have been the safest place—her home.

Former legislator Tarsem Jodhan described the murder as a failure of governance on a global scale and alleged that politicians and corporate sectors exploit young people to advance their economic and political agendas.

“Nancy Grewal is not the only victim of this nexus. Youth killings in Punjab are also part of the same exploitative system,” Jodhan said.

Meanwhile, Nancy’s mother, Chhinder Pal Kaur, currently living with one of her daughters in Jalandhar, demanded justice for her daughter. In an interview with a news channel, she accused certain hardliners residing in Windsor of being responsible for the murder.

Local Sarpanch Manjinder Singh Grewal noted that Nancy’s family had filed a complaint related to a property dispute in late 2024.

“Although the complaint was lodged before my tenure as sarpanch, officials from the Block Development Panchayat Office contacted me after my election in October 2024 for clarification,” he said. The dispute concerned property near a historic religious site on the outskirts of the village.
