The Municipal Corporation has failed to find a permanent solution to the problem of overflowing sewers and waterlogging during the rainy days on Panj Peer Road in the Ludhiana West constituency.
Whenever it rains even for a short time, the MC’s main sewerage line often starts overflowing on the road. After the rainfall lashed the city last week, the sewers badly overflowed, flooding Panj Peer Road once again.
The stinking water remained accumulated on the road for hours, leaving the residents and commuters to face a harrowing time.
In 2021, the residents had pinned hopes to heave a sigh of relief when the MC made a way to drain out accumulated water from Panj Peer Road into the nearby Barewal drain but the residents said they have not gotten any relief till date as sewers still overflow during rainfall and the road gets flooded with stinking water.
The MC, however, had got the Barewal drain cleaned but it took no steps to stop dairy owners from dumping dung/dairy waste in the same drain. Huge amount of dung is being dumped in the drain in absence of any check.
A resident of Panj Peer Road, Balraj Singh Rai said, “Even after a short spell of rain, the sewers start overflowing here. Within minutes, the entire road gets flooded with the black-coloured stinking sewage water. Many times, it flows into houses and shops too. We have raised the issue many times during the past two decades but the civic body failed to find out any solution to date.”
Balraj Singh said the MC has spent crores of rupees on different projects which remained unsuccessful. “Earlier, the sewerage lines were cleaned with super suction machines by spending a huge amount. Last year, MC introduced a project to drain out the water in the nearby drain but we have not gotten any relief from overflowing sewers during the rainy days. The civic body should make sure that its sewer system should not overflow in any condition”, he said.
The MC had also installed new sewerage pipes to avoid water accumulation in the past but to no avail. Another resident, Pankaj Prabhakar said, “We want a permanent solution to the problem of overflowing sewers. Now, I made complaints to the CM and Deputy Commissioner, Ludhiana, on the issue. The government must take this problem seriously and ensure resolution.”
The sewerage water from Gill Road, Dugri, Bhai Randhir Singh Nagar and other areas is released into the main sewer line that passes beneath the Panj Peer Road. The main sewerage line is connected with Balloke Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP). The flow of sewer water remains too high in the main line during the rainy days.
Notably, Panj Peer Road falls in Ward No 78 from where Mayor Balkar Singh Sandhu is the councillor. Mayor had recently stated that the staff was deployed to get the drain cleaned in view of the rainy season.
MC SDO Anshul Garcha said the drain cleaning work was completed recently. He said that an effluent treatment plant would be set up for handling dairy waste at the Dairy complex on Hambran Road.
Ludhiana West MLA Gurpreet Gogi said a project would be planned to resolve the issue related to the sewerage system on Panj Peer Road. Moreover, the steps would be taken to prevent the dumping of dairy waste in the drain, he added.
