No toll fee from 12 pm to 3 pm across Punjab: Ludhiana toll workers protest cashless system
Employees allege new boothless, cashless system poses a serious threat to their jobs
The Ludhiana Toll Plaza Workers Union, Punjab (Regd), has sounded the bugle for a statewide agitation, with protest demonstrations planned at toll plazas across Punjab on Wednesday.
As part of the protest, the Ladowal toll plaza near Ludhiana will remain toll-free from 12 noon to 3 pm.
Union leaders said they are opposing the cashless policy and the ongoing digitalisation process. Employees claim that the government’s “boothless policy” poses a serious threat to their jobs.
As a mark of protest, toll barriers will be kept open for three hours, and no fee will be collected from any vehicle.
Rejection of the cashless policy: The union has opposed the move to implement a completely cashless system, alleging that the employees are being laid off under the guise of digitalisation. It has demanded the immediate withdrawal of the plan to eliminate toll booths.
The union has also appealed to farmers’ bodies and labour organisations across Punjab to support the agitation.
With a large gathering of employees and supporters expected at Ladowal at noon, authorities have made adequate security arrangements.
