One dies, 16 hurt as bus overturns

LUDHIANA: A youth in his twenties was killed while 16 persons were injured when a bus run by a private company overturned near Aliwal village on Sidhwan Bet-Hambran Road early in the morning on Tuesday.

A youth in his twenties was killed while 16 persons were injured when a bus run by a private company overturned near Aliwal village on Sidhwan Bet-Hambran Road early in the morning on Tuesday. The deceased has been identified as Jagpal Singh (27), a resident of Leehan village near Mullanpur Dakha.

Most injured are women who were coming to Ludhiana for work. The injured have been identified as Gurmit Kaur, Amanjot Kaur, Kuljit Kaur, Harman Kaur, Satnam Kaur, Seema, Avtar Kaur, Ekamjot Kaur, Davinder Singh, Lakshman Singh, Ujagar Singh, Ramneek Kaur and Nachhatar Singh.

Soon after the accident, police teams from the Sidhwan Bet and Mullanpur Dakha stations reached the

spot and rushed the injured to hospitals. Around six persons are undergoing treatment at Sidhwan Bet Civil Hospital while the remaining have been admitted to private hospitals of the area. All injured are stated to be out of danger. 

According to information, the bus was coming to Ludhiana from Sidhwan Bet. It started its journey from Sidhwan Bet around 7:35 am. As soon as the bus reached outside Aliwal village, it overturned due to the poor condition of the road. 

According to sources, it was a mini-bus and more than 60 passengers were travelling in it against the authorised capacity of 28 passengers. “As soon as the bus reached near Aliwal village, the driver lost control over the vehicle due to the poor condition of the road and it overturned,” the sources said. 

Jagraon SSP Varinder Singh Brar said the police had launched investigation into the matter and appropriate action would be taken after thorough investigation.
