Even more than two years after the formation of the MC House, the Finance and Contract Committee is incomplete. The Opposition councillors have complained that two members are not being nominated to the panel despite their repeated demand.

Mayor Balkar Singh Sandhu, Senior Deputy Mayor Sham Sundar Malhotra and Deputy Mayor Sarabjit Kaur are the members of the panel. Leader of the Opposition in MC House Harbhajan Singh Dang said two councillors should be nominated to complete the panel at the earliest.

There is a majority of Congress councillors in the sixth MC House that was formed in March 2018. The Akali councillors raised questions over the delay in nomination of two members to the panel.

Jaspal Singh Giaspura, SAD councillor, said: “The F&CC panel is still incomplete even more than two years after the formation of House. We have raised the matter multiple times. Without completing the panel, a number of F&CC meetings have already been held. Two members of the panel should be nominated without any further delay.”

The F&CC is the key committee of the Municipal Corporation as the panel takes all important decisions related to the development of the city, such as awarding of contracts, expenditure and other things.

When the SAD-BJP councillors had majority during the fifth House (2012-2017), the Congress councillors then demanded for nomination of two members for the panel. On the demand of Congress councillors, Balkar Singh Sandhu of the Congress was then nominated as F&CC member.

Leader of the Opposition in MC House Harbhajan Singh Dang said: “When the SAD-BJP combine was in majority last time, an Opposition councillor was included as F&CC member. We have requested many times to the Mayor to include at least one Opposition councillor as member in the panel but to no avail. I will meet the Mayor and raise the matter once again.”

Mayor Balkar Singh Sandhu said two members would be nominated to the panel soon.
