Various religious organisations are coming forward to ensure provision of food to the needy during curfew. Food packages are being prepared at various locations in the district so that the needy do not go hungry.
A member of the SGPC, Gurcharan Singh Grewal, said ‘langar’ was prepared at gurdwara Alamgir Sahib daily to be served to the needy in various parts of the district.
“Langar is prepared for around 20,000 people every day at gurdwara. Around 10,000 food packets are handed over to the district administration, police and other officials for distribution,” he added.
The zonal secretary of Radha Soami Satsang Beas, Gurminder Singh, said they were preparing over 1.10 lakh food packets at 10 centres in Ludhiana district daily. “Food packets are handed over to the staff of various government departments, who then distribute the food packets to the needy. Besides the volunteers, devotees are also distributing food packets at various locations,” he added.
Langar is also being prepared at gurdwara Shaheed Baba Deep Singh, Model Town Exetnsion. A trustee of the gurdwara Trust, Amarjeet Singh Tikka, said around 2,000 packets of food were prepared every day and were served to the needy people and cops on duty. The management committee and devotees would continue to make efforts to provide food in various areas in the coming days as well, he added.
There are several more religious and social organisations who are preparing food packets for the needy people in the wake of the curfew.
